'If it was up to me we'd have none of you, you'd all be infantry. Since you're not, I'm going to leave now on our first presence patrol with me in command. I want you to think about the real marines who are taking the real risks and how you need to do everything you can for them. Is that clear?' The assembled men shout back: 'Sir, Yes, Sir!'

So it’s been a little while since I wrote anything, which is down to a number of factors, none of which really need delving into. Suffice to say I needed a short break from the game but it’s time to get back into the swing of things.I played a few more games with the exact same Boba-Zuckuss list, coming out with marginally more wins than losses. To me this is where the list is really at; it’s not bad as it borrows some elements from some of the stronger lists around at the moment, but it’s not top-tier as it’s employing this approach using inferior (for now at least) ship chassis. With the arrival of wave 14 I figured I’d switch things up a bit and try to employ some of my findings to some new/better things. The TIE Reaper expansion is not one I was initially going to purchase; however the reveal of the Multi Spectral Camouflage was somewhat interesting, as a potential replacement for the Stygium on Zuckuss. Stygium only works whilst the Cloaking Device is still around and after it breaks is effectively two points wasted. At a point cheaper MSC could offer some decent protection as well as give me a one point bid. But it has quickly become obvious that Director Krennic is a hugely powerful card and so I was tempted to play around with that instead.

Whisper seems a good a place as any for him to go, and that led me to construct the following list:—–Whisper (46)Veteran Instincts, Sensor Jammer, Advanced Cloaking Device, Director KrennicOmega Leader (21)A Score To SettleScarif Base Pilot (30)Advanced Ailerons, Emperor PalpatineTotal Points: 97—–Whisper here is fulfilling the Zuckuss role from before, but better – a four dice attack (which now doesn’t give the opponent an extra green dice), a Sensor Jammer on defense as well as more green dice, the Cloak ability (which now doesn’t break), and then the target lock/shield stripping of Krennic. All for only a few points more. I’ve only ever put the Phantom on the board once in the whole time I’ve played X-Wing, so I suspect there’s going to be a steep learning curve here. The TIE Reaper with its Jam action can fulfil a similar role to the Hot Shot Co-Pilot from before, and in addition it gets to carry Palpatine for some guaranteed dice results. With its Advanced Ailerons it’s also a lot more maneuverable than the traditional Lambda as a Palp carrier. Finally we have a cheap Omega Leader to round things out. I’ve never tried this version of her before (I ran Juke/Comm Relay OL for a long time immediately after the FO release) but I can’t think of a better 21 point filler ship here. Not quite the monster of the full-on build, but still dangerous enough to do some damage. Plus ASTS is great against other Sensor Jammers.

(I’m looking at you, Lothal Rebel). So after hastily theory-crafting and putting this together I managed to sneak in a couple of quick games with the local group. First up was with Guy, who was also playing with some wave 14 toys. Namely Saw in his U-wing, along with an Intensity Leevan Tenza and Expertise Luke Skywalker in their upgraded X-wings.

Chase me, chase me!Luke was my desired primary target here, with R2-D2 and his pilot ability he’d be a pain to kill last if I had fewer guns on the board. Guy clearly wanted Palp dead first as the first half of the game he chased the Reaper around the board. Thankfully the ailerons let me keep the distance with minimal damage. Then Guy turned in on Omega Leader but the FO survived with two hull remaining, and Whisper managed to get behind Luke and eventually obliterate him. OL got behind Saw to chip away at him, and then Whisper did the surprise decloak forwards, and k-turned over a rock to get a kill shot on the U-wing, as I Palped a blank to make sure I took no damage from the obstacle. Whisper was on two health at this point so I couldn’t take a double risk there!

Fallout 4 vault girl mods. After that it was a case of hunting down Leevan who was getting no use out of Intensity for a good half the game as the Reaper continually jammed the X-wing. I end up winning 100-0 although my ships are all on fire at this point. One thing I found was that there were a lot of triggers to remember (I forgot I had Sensor Jammer for about 6 rounds) and this list will need some serious practice if I want to play it at any sort of event.Onto my second game of the night and I play Matt who is flying Phil GC’s Bobba/Fenn list. With Boba at PS 10 I’m a little worried about Whisper surviving this one, but there’s no point not playing difficult matchups – how else do you learn how to play?

See Fenn run. Run, Fenn, run! Both of Matt’s ships again went at the Reaper initially, but a Proton Torp from Fenn only knocked off a single shield. And then the jam went to work. Fenn was not getting a focus token again for almost the entirety of the game as he desperately repositioned to avoid the kill box I kept trying to set up. He had to flee from the fight totally, which let me put some damage into Boba whilst he was gone, though I was taking some damage myself, mainly thanks to Boba’s Bomblet Generator. Eating a few bombs was the only way to keep guns on and I needed to be doing damage whilst Fenn was away. Eventually the Protectorate swung back into the fight, and found himself jammed yet again and then blocked by the Reaper for good measure.

Whisper and OL put 3 damage into him including the PS 0 crit, which was then curtains the next turn. The Reaper continued its Jam barrage, now onto Bobba, which meant he never got off his Harpoon missiles the entire game. To add insult to injury, it was the Reaper who delivered the killing blow, scoring three hits on Boba from long-range who promptly blanked out to seal his fate. Another 100-0 win.So a successful debut from a new list, though in the hands of a more capable Whisper player I feel it could be absolutely lethal. Krennic is definitely very, very strong for his points cost, but I was pleasantly surprised just how good the Reaper was. I took it over the Omicron Lambda for the better maneuverability, but it proved much more than that. It can escape better when needed, but it can also get back in the fight much more easily, so you’re not limited to one good pass and probably nothing else for the rest of the game.

The Jam action is super good too, it was probably the main reason I picked up the victory in game 2. And I had an evening of gaming without people repeatedly telling me how much they hate Hotshot Co-Pilot! We’ll see how this one goes next time, but a cautious thumbs up for this list.
