I am in the market for a new pair of waders. I don't use them nearly as much as I should, right, Jason?The time I use them the most is in the fall and even early-winter since that is the time I seem to be able to get out the most for some reason. A few years ago, I got myself into a pickle and got into water that was too deep and too fast, so I am diligent in making sure I don't let that ever happen to me again. I also seem to be warm a lot and am even 'warm' when it is really cold.I currently have a leaky pair of chest-high waders and am thinking about possibly buying a pair of waist-high waders for both the reasons above and, of course, because they are a few bucks cheaper than their higher brethren.

I am still in a season of having to watch my shekels, so this is attractive, too.But am I limiting myself at all? I know it will make it so I don't go into that deeper water but I think that is a good thing, personally, because that experience I had really left its mark. Also, I can't swim, which is a little bit of a disadvantage when one is playing around water, huh?I know this is a personal decision but are there reasons there aren't nearly as many waist-high choices? Is it because you lose more than simply not being able to go as deep or, possibly, you don't stay as warm?Also, is it stupid to think about a pair of these:?? Seems like middle ground, especially when it is a little chilly out.I think these things last only so long, even if you don't use them often.

And maybe mine went after four or five years because I didn't use them enough. I remember that I screwed up and just stuffed them in my bag (after they were dry) for an extended period of time-like five or six months. That may have helped hasten their demise.ray. There are more chest waders models available and more people wearing chest waders rather than waist high waders because waders are a specific tool and can be relatively expensive, so most buy the one that does more- chest waders.

You can wade deeper in chest-mode, or roll them down to the wading belt if it's too warm or if the water just isn't that deep.I am aging and I'm looking carefully at gear that will help me with problems I haven't had to worry about for a long time. I recently bought a wading staff.

I had an old ski pole that I carried around for a short time, 'til I found out I could wade carefully and mostly not need it. I also recently bought an automatic self-inflating PFD. My old vest style was fine when I could generally count on having no problems with the canoe, now I want some insurance and I can wear it under my fly vest if I'm worried about high water or how well my knees are working.Generally speaking, go with a good brand recommended by folks on this site, spend the $ for a good model and enjoy worry-free wading. Make sure you always wear a wading belt! Well they are a great price and the other neoprene waders in that line get good reviews and they have a lifetime warranty so it is a very low risk to buy them and try them out.Waist highs are more comfortable and cooler than chest highs. Chest highs are preferred to protect you if you get in to water higher than your waist.

As you stated you can not swim maybe it is a good thing to remind you as you get water close to your waist! You might also consider wearing a inflatable PFD either on your waist or around your neck just i case. Chest highs usually have a hand-warmer pocket too so that can be handy on a chilly day.Neoprene does not breath as well as other materials so they are warmer and definitely not recommended for warm days. But they do keep you dry and are pretty comfortable. You said you only use them in the late fall and winter so air temp may not be an issue for you.I have chest high boot foot neoprene's that I wear to fish in the salt/bay and for duck hunting. They are very comfortable and very warm.

I like the boot foot in the deep mud because the suction won't pull my boots off and I don't get small shells between my sock and my boot.I also have zip front chest highs from Orvis w/stocking foot, a pair of Allen company breathable stocking foot lightweight chest highs and a waist high boot foot pair that Cabelas used to sell a few years ago that look like cargo pants with hiking boots. I have not had an leak issues with any of these.I wear all of these at various times and if camping I will switch waders when switching rivers to reduce the possibility of carrying invasives from one river to another.However, the majority of the year I wet wade with Simms rip-rap shoes and sims neoprene wading socks. Then I wear nylon or polyester pants and if necessary fleece long johns. I roll the socks up sometimes for water up to 18' deep. But even with water in the socks my feet stay warm in the neoprene.

By the way I also have multiple wading socks and multiple boots to not carry invasives to different waters.I clean my waders and socks when I get home to further protect against critters playing hitch-hiker on them.Regards,Tim C. I think about getting a PFD sometimes but also realize that I only go 'so' deep and I am 95% of the time going only deep enough that my head will be above the water as I sit on the bottom. But I also never go anywhere without my wading stick either.It is true that I can fold the chest waders down and I would be fibbing if I said I even thought of that.But it seems that the waist high waders may be what I am looking for but, maybe don't be such a dangblam cheapskate.I think I will go to Cabelas and Orvis and LL Bean and look over their offerings. I like the look and price of those Scierra waist waders George, except I was wondering how many soakings I would likely get when releasing a fish.It often happens with the chesties when standing too deep in the river and I lean over just a bit too much!I tend to just fold the neoprene c/ waders down to waist level when walking but boy do they make you sweat!I've had a pair of Hunter 'Shore Fisher' thigh waders for donkeys years which have stood up to lots of abuse, ( do use wader clamps though). The seams have started to give out and can't find like for like.
